Making Drawing move: animation workshop
One year after completing my Master’s, I was happy to be invited by painting professor Rajkamal Kahlon to give a workshop on animation at HFBK Hamburg.
The workshop aimed to introduce animation as an extension of painting practice in an accessible way. Rather than relying on specialized equipment or expensive software, I showed students how to create animations using free, accessible tools, scanners, cameras, and materials they already had around them.
Since the students already had a background in painting, the focus was not on learning how to draw, but on exploring time, rhythm, movement, and sequencing. Through creative exercises, I introduced the technical aspects of creating a simple frame-by-frame animation and showed how painted images could be translated into moving sequences.
By the end of the workshop, each student had created a short animated GIF, giving them a first practical experience with animation that they could later incorporate into their own artistic practice.
